HARRIS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY
PRESTON
A group exhibition of work by members of ArtLab.We were all asked to respond to a piece of work in the Harris Museum & Art Galleries collection or to respond to the Harris. I chose a large ironstone china jug made by Clayhills Pottery, Staffs 1866.
I was attracted by the humor and mischief of the characters on the ironstone china jug.
I experimented with various plates, images and composition.
The final piece is a play on re-working the narrative as I was interested to see how the characters interacted with one another and the narrative changed when removed from their original context and re-positioned.

EARLIER EXPERIMENTS
My initial response was to consider the tableware in the Rotunda cafe, on my early visit to photograph and draw in the Rotunda I found two 'puzzle jugs' on the first floor of the Harris. I liked the idea of using the jester on the jug and started working on ideas that would incorporate the jester within the objects from the Rotunda. I googled 'puzzle jug' and the search results gave a completely different type of jug. I was 'puzzled'. I still wanted to use the jester in some way as well as the glass cake dome (actually I think it might be plastic), anyway 'a complete and utter puzzle' was the result. All plates are shaped collagraphs and the jester slots together like a jigsaw puzzle.

I then went on to carry out further experiments and 'the night at the museum' was one of these. I quite liked the idea of the man getting ready for a soiree or party in the museum.

'A Night at the Museum'
I continued to experiment with the shaped plates and various compositions. Three printing days and five prints later, I finally decided to submit 'the friends of the harris'.
